Erectile Dysfuntion (ED) is an extremely common condition that affects almost all
men at some time, and around 10% on a more regular and even constant basis. The good
news is that the outlook for people with ED is very good indeed. Recent years in
particular have seen great strides in the understanding and treatment of the condition,
and new and highly effective drugs have also had a very positive impact.
There is
no need to put up with it or to suffer in silence.
Many men may find it embarrassing to approach a medical professional to talk about ED, almost as though it were some kind of inadequacy or failing on their part. This is a complete misconception. The root causes for ED can be as varied as side effects from medication for another condition through to pressure on nerves in the pelvic region through cycling.
MEDICINAL CAUSES
Medicines such as diuretics (used to increase urine production and
often in relation to hypertension, heart failure or kidney disease) are known to
give rise to ED. Beta blockers, fibrates used to reduce cholesterol levels, antipsychotics,
antidepressants, steroids and some drugs used to treat stomach ulcers are also likely
candidates. In such cases, treatment could be as simple and straightforward as switching
from one type to another.
PSYCHOLOGICAL CAUSES
Stress, depression and anxiety are common causes of ED, and sometimes one thing acts
with another to cause a situation resulting in ED. Someone who is under stress at
work may have one or two episodes of ED, and then begin to worry about it. The worry,
combined with the underlying stress, results in more and more episodes in a self-
Another cause is of course unresolved issues or problems with your partner. Again, a conversation with a disinterested medical professional will often identify the underlying causes and help you to address them.
OTHER CAUSES
Your general physical wellbeing has an obvious effect on sexual performance. Smoking, weight, alcohol and the use of recreational drugs are well known and well documented causes of ED. Vitamin or mineral deficiencies, or even periods of concentrated hard work, such as when approaching an important deadline or meeting a demanding target, can manifest themselves as ED.
HOW WE CAN HELP
The first thing to realise is that there is no need whatsoever to feel any embarrassment about ED. As we explained, all men will suffer from it at some time or another. We will have a chat with you about your overall life and lifestyle to get a picture which almost always enables us to pinpoint the cause.
Many patients prefer to come to Medicentre in order not to have to talk to their own GP. Both Medicentre and your GP would take the same view – as long as the issue is addressed, it is entirely your choice.
Should we suspect a physical cause, then there are a number of tests that can be conducted to narrow things down; usually done as simple blood tests for things such as hormone or glucose levels etc.
TREATMENT
Unless there is an over-
In other cases, we may prescribe Viagra or Cialis, which are very widely used and highly effective means of treating ED.
We may refer you to a hormone specialist (endocrinologist) or simply advise you to exercise more. There are a number of approaches, and the correct one usually becomes apparent during the first consultation.
The key thing to remember is that there is no need whatsoever to feel embarrassed in any way. ED is as common as the common cold – the difference being that we can do something about ED!
