Medicentre offers a wide range of contraceptives including oral contraception and Depo-Provera injections (see below). Before recommending a contraceptive, our GP will make an assessment which will cover your age, medical history and sex life. Our GP's pride themselves in providing open, frank and non-judgmental advice that is focused solely and completely on your needs and wellbeing.

There are side effects associated with some contraceptives, and it is critical that these are properly explained and fully considered before deciding what sort of protection is best suited to you.

You may want or need to change your contraception as you get older, after having children or if your sex life changes in any way. Whatever the reason, you can be assured of the very best advice at Medicentre.

DEPO PROVERA
Depo-Provera injection is as a long-term form of contraception usually given into the buttock or upper arm. The injection produces a reservoir of preventative hormone in the muscle, which is then released continuously into the bloodstream over a period of 12 weeks.

The first injection is given in the first five days of a normal menstrual cycle. This will provide immediate protection from pregnancy. The injection can be given at any other time in your cycle if you are not pregnant, but you will need to use additional contraception such as condoms for the first 8 days after having the injection. Further injections should be given every 12 weeks to provide continued contraception.

If you have had a miscarriage or an abortion at under 24 weeks, you can have this injection immediately you will be protected against pregnancy straight away. If you have the injection more than seven days after the miscarriage or abortion, you will need to use extra contraception to prevent pregnancy for the first 8 days.

We will discuss the pros and cons of Depo Provera with you thoroughly - particularly if you are planning to have children after stopping the injections. The time it takes to get pregnant after the injections have stopped varies from person to person - by as much as 15 months for some people.
