BERNIE NOLAN AND DJ SONIQUE URGE WOMEN
NOT TO IGNORE LUMPS

Irish singer and actress Bernie Nolan has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Bernie Nolan, the actress and Nolan sister, has announced she has breast cancer. The 49-year-old has said she now faces a mastectomy and chemotherapy saying "I'm going to kick this cancer's ass."

Bernie, who was born in Dublin, spent many years singing and touring with her sisters before moving into television where she starred in series such as 'Brookside' and 'The Bill'. Most recently she took part in ITV's reality TV show 'Pop Star to Opera Star'.

Speaking about her 10-year-old daughter, Nolan said "The best thing about having a child is I have the extra strength because I want to see her grow up and I have to be strong for her."

"We should be called The Cancer Sisters, shouldn't we? All my family have been amazing, all my sisters phoned me with support and love, Linda particularly because she has had a mastectomy. Something like this brings you closer together."

Two of her sisters, Anne and Linda, have already fought the disease. So far her other sisters, Loose Women presenter Coleen, 45, Maureen, 55, and Denise, 58, are clear.

The actress, who has starred in The Bill and Brookside, was diagnosed after deciding to have a lump in her breast checked in April. She had discovered it over Christmas but had dismissed it as a harmless cyst similar to one she had in 2006. Her visit to a clinic was also delayed by her 'hectic' schedule - she had finished a tour with The Nolans in November before taking part in ITV1's Popstar to Operastar earlier this year.

She told GMTV: "I am definitely going to have a mastectomy. I have just told the doctor to get it out of me."

DJ SONIQUE GIVEN ALL-CLEAR

Just a day after Bernie Nolan made her announcement, DJ Sonique was given the all-clear following her battle with the disease. Like Bernie, she had put off going to the doctor when she discovered a lump, and she urged other women not to do the same.

Sonique is one of 20 celebrities, including Kym Marsh, Caroline Quentin and Danielle Lloyd, who have banded together to re-record Cyndi Lauper's '80s classic Girls Just Want To Have Fun, in aid of Cancer Research UK.

The timing of the release is to help launch the charity's annual Race for Life fund-raising events for women.
